BAH, Explained: Your Coverage in 2020
January 29, 2020
The new year brings new opportunities, fresh starts, and for the military population, an update to BAH allowances. In a statement released by the Department of Defense last month, it was announced that BAH allowances were to increase by an average of 2.8% in 2020—a slight jump up from the 2.5% increase seen in 2019.
But how will this increase benefit you and your family? And what is BAH, exactly? In a nutshell, BAH (or Basic Allowance for Housing) provides housing allowance for military service members who are either married or have dependents (with some exceptions). Your BAH is an allowance on top of your flat salary and is determined by three key factors: your rank/pay grade, your dependency status, and your geographic duty location. The allowance also corresponds with the median rental costs and average utility costs in your location.
